LOOKING AHEAD: Intelligence Squared Debate (June 8, 2010)

Neustar Sponsors Debate About Cybersecurity in Washington, D.C.

How can our global society go to battle if there is no consensus as to the scope of the conflict, the nature of the enemy – or even the reason for fighting? That’s the conundrum at the heart of what the IT security industry terms “cyber war.” It has led some people to question just how large of a threat cyber war actually is. In fact, security and policy experts, as well as high-ranking government officials, are not immune to mixed opinions about how to classify incidences of online espionage, terrorism and other criminal activity.

Intelligence Squared U.S., a public charity supported by individuals and foundations seeking to raise the level of public discourse on critical issues, recently announced that it will conduct a live debate (The Cyber War Threat Has Been Grossly Exaggerated ) from Washington, D.C. on June 8, 2010 on this explosive and highly relevant topic, and that Neustar will be the corporate underwriter.

“It is heartening to see that the challenges and threats in the cybersecurity arena are now in everyday discussion, and that a public debate can garner such wide interest,” said Neustar Chairman and CEO Jeff Ganek.

Of particular interest will be the “civil liberties” tack the debate is certain to take. Even as the United States has achieved a level of digital sophistication few (if any) nations in the world can match, we are also vulnerable to those who would use advanced technologies against us. In the words of Robert Rosenkranz, Intelligence Squared U.S. founder: “Might we need to sacrifice openness to protect America? This and other critical questions will be considered during our debate in Washington.”

Tickets for the June 8 debate at Washington, D.C.’s Newseum are available for purchase online at https://app.etapestry.com/hosted/IntelligenceSquared/OnlineRegistration.html. Seating is limited, so act soon.
