I recently gave a webinar on load testing best practices to ensure holiday success. While the title is specifically geared towards the holiday shopping season, all of the techniques are applicable and relevant to everyday performance and operations activities. In all of our load testing with hundreds of different customers over the years, I’ve seen my share of high-performing and low-performing websites. The high-performing sites all have generally followed the same practices and methodology, which is by no means a coincidence:
* Establish clear and measurable benchmarks for your site
* Know your competitors and their performance
* Use the latest and greatest web performance profiling tools as you test and build your site
* Ensure you have a disaster recovery (DR) plan and TEST it before you actually need it!
* Review your network throughput needs
* Follow a strict test methodology and set clear objectives for the test
* It’s OK to fail (your site eventually will), so focus on what you have control over now
